The cheapness and availability of processed foods containing high levels of fat, sugar and salt, combined with other features of modern life such as lack of exercise and irregular eating patterns, are becoming increasingly recognised as potential causes of ill-health.

The high energy content of such foods means that many people are regularly consuming more calories than they are expending, with the result that the surplus energy is being stored in the form of body fat. As a consequence the proportion of the population which falls into the category of being “overweight” or “obese” is now reaching epidemic levels.

Excessive weight has been identified as a significant factor in a number of illnesses. It adds to the demands made on the skeletal system and the heart, increasing the risk of arthritis and cardio-vascular disorders. Diabetes and a number of different forms of cancer have also been linked to being overweight. In addition it can result in psychological difficulties such as low self-esteem, lack of confidence, anxiety and depression, which increase the desire for comfort eating, further adding to the problem.

Hypnotherapy can be beneficial not so much by helping individuals to stick to unrealistic short-term “crash diets” in order to lose weight: but more by building on the natural desire for good health, drawing attention to the long-term benefits of a well-balanced diet, and strengthening the motivation to develop a new approach towards eating - the approach of a connoisseur who takes a pleasure in eating fresh nourishing foods in moderate quantities.

Useful progress towards achieving these goals can often be achieved in four or five sessions at weekly intervals, although of course it may take a good deal longer for individuals to reach the weight that they consider to be healthy. To help with this audio-tapes (recorded during the sessions) are provided so that clients can continue the therapy at home.

Sometimes weight problems may be connected to deeper psychological insecurity - particularly for those who are considerably overweight, and have been so since childhood. In such cases additional sessions may be useful to identify some of the issues involved, and to provide support during any difficult or anxious periods that may be experienced whilst making the readjustments towards a more healthy physique.
